Lana Peterson, right, and her daughter, Jenna, shop for jewelry at Mel’s Nursery on Tuesday in Spokane. The nursery plans to close its doors in September. Peterson said the nursery was the first shop she discovered when she moved to Spokane years ago. Jenna, who has shopped with her mother at Mel’s for most of her life, said she will miss the sugar cookies and jewelry section.

Employee Thomas Brighton, 25, carries baskets from a storeroom to Mel’s Nursery on Tuesday. “These baskets have probably been back here for years,” Brighton said.
