In brief: Carrousel birthday this weekend
Downtown – The Looff Carrousel is marking 104 years with a birthday celebration on Fridayand Saturday, both days from 2-6 p.m. Janene Grende, who illustrated the book, “The Great Carousel Race,” will be there for a book signing and there will be birthday hats, balloons, cake and coloring activities for everyone. The celebration takes place at the Looff Carrousel, near the Howard Street entrance to Riverfront Park.
South Perry Fair set for Saturday
South Perry – The South Perry Street Fair runs Saturdayfrom 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Vendors and exhibitors will fill Grant Park and that’s also where you’ll find the dunk tank featuring Councilman Jon Snyder and local business owners. The Pixies are giving a roller derby demonstration at 10:30 a.m. and there will be African drumming and dancing workshops at 11 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Booths with demonstrations from Mobius and STCU’s science, technology, engineering and math program run through the day. Live music begins at 10 a.m. with Moksha and features The Angela Marie Project, The Blisstrz and many others through 5 p.m. A parade is not scheduled this year. Garland honors actress at fair
Garland – The Annual Garland Street Fair is Saturdayfrom 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. This fair is a tribute to Judy Garland and “The Wizard of Oz,” featuring a Judy Garland impersonation contest, a Toto look-alike contest and an Oz characters costume contest – among many other scheduled events. The fair covers four blocks of Garland Avenue between Monroe and Howard Streets, and features street vendors, live comedy acts, kids’ activities and arts and crafts. Cancer group lauds Eric Miller
Spokane – The American Childhood Cancer Organization Inland Northwest gave its first Golden Heart Award to Eric Miller, a registered nurse at Providence Sacred Heart Children’s Hospital, for his work in the pediatric oncology unit there. $8,500 donated for swim lessons
Spokane – The Spokane Parks Foundation and the USA Swimming Foundation have donated $8,500 toward swim lesson scholarships at city pools. Two sessions remain open and there are still some scholarships available. Sessions begin on July 29 and Aug. 12 at all pools. Application forms are available at www.spokaneparks.org under “aquatics.”
Barbecue planned for homeless
Downtown – Blessings Under the Bridge, the outreach ministry that serves a hot meal for homeless people on Wednesdays at 4 p.m. at the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Browne Street, under the Interstate 90 viaduct, will have a summer barbecue in the same location on Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. Many social service agencies, such as Vanessa Behan Crisis Nursery, WIC and Spokane County Juvenile Court/CASA, will be represented there; the Gonzaga women’s basketball team will serve lunch and Paul Mitchell volunteers will offer free haircuts. Lakeland Village open house set
