On Wednesday, Forbes released its annual list of highest-paid actors and, for the first time, Robert Downey Jr. topped the list. The man best known these days for playing Tony Stark had raked in $75 million between June 2012 and June of this year, best among all actors.
News reports were breathless – not least of which the report from Forbes itself, which touted his success as a coup of sorts. “It’s hard to remember that just a few years ago, Downey was box-office poison, and regarded by the studios as damaged goods.” Now, the magazine said, “he’s a hit machine.”
Singer says he’s American, too
Apparently, some people need to be reminded that Marc Anthony is an American.
The New York-born singer of Puerto Rican descent touted his roots on “Live with Kelly and Michael” on Thursday after some people criticized his selection to sing “God Bless America” at this week’s Major League Baseball All-Star Game, held in New York City.
In an interview, the Grammy-winning salsa star said he heard that people were questioning why a foreign-born person was singing the patriotic song. Anthony said he was born in New York and added: “You can’t get more New York than me.”
Similar comments were made last month when a Texas-born 11-year-old mariachi singer sang the national anthem during the NBA finals. Both Anthony and the child are Latino.
Rowling’s alter ego outed by law firm
The mystery has been solved.
A British law firm admitted Thursday that one of its partners inadvertently revealed that J.K. Rowling had authored a mystery novel, “The Cuckoo’s Calling.”
The Sunday Times newspaper revealed over the weekend that the creator of Harry Potter had penned the book under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith.
The newspaper said it had received a tip-off on Twitter, and there was speculation that Rowling or her publisher were behind the revelation – which has sent sales of the thriller skyrocketing.
But law firm Russells said Thursday that one of its partners, Chris Gossage, had let the information slip to his wife’s best friend, Judith Callegari – the woman behind the tweet. Her Twitter account has now been deleted.
A phone message left for Callegari was not immediately returned.
