Obituary: Bendix, Jane D. “Jean”

BENDIX, Jane D. “Jean” (Cockburn) (Age 90) Passed away on July 5, 2013 of age related causes.

Jean was born in Spokane, Washington, to Henry and Jane Cockburn on December 20, 1922, preceded in death by her brother Robert Cockburn.

She graduated from North Central High School in 1940 and then attended Kinman Business School.

She married Joseph Lesley Bendix in 1944 when he returned from the army with a medical discharge after the Guadalcanal Campaign.

They were married for almost 37 years until his death in 1981.

Jean worked during World War II at Washington Water Power, raised her two sons, and finished her career as a secretary at Administration Services for 28 years.

She then volunteered at St. Luke’s Hospital for 10 years.

She is survived by her sons Mike (Pam) of Walla Walla, Hank (Betty) of Eugene, Oregon, five grandchildren (Keith, Tricia, Michael, Andy, Stacy), and nine great-grandchildren.

Her fondest memories were of summer gatherings at Priest Lake with family and friends, whom she treasured.

She will be remembered for her positive approach to life, her sense of humor, her unwavering religious faith, and her love of a cold beer and a good slot machine!

Services are being cared for by Hazen & Jaeger Funeral home.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 2, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. at Fairmount Memorial Park.

A celebration of Jean’s life will follow at Northern Quest Resort & Casino in the Pend Oreille Pavilion Room.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials be made to Hospice House of Spokane or Union Gospel Mission.
