Here’s the Dirt: Craft brewery to open in Hayden

Owners of a new craft brewery planning to open in Hayden in September will name several of their beers for friends killed while disarming explosive devices in Afghanistan.

Mad Bomber Brewing Co. is part-owned by three Army explosive ordnance disposal technicians. Head brewer and co-owner Tom Applegate said it’s important to honor soldiers willing to walk toward something the rest of the world runs away from.

Applegate’s partners include John Taylor, and Alan and Stephanie Longacre. One of their original partners, Army Staff Sgt. Nicholas Reid, died in December from injuries caused by an explosive device in Afghanistan.

The business, to be located at 9265 N. Government Way, is seeking state and federal permits and is on schedule to open in mid-September.

Initially, Mad Bomber will produce about 40 gallons of beer per batch.

Kroc Center plans expansion

The Salvation Army Kroc Corps Community Center in Coeur d’Alene will get bigger.

A $1.15 million expansion starting on the building’s west end will add 2,700 square feet of fitness space in the next six months.

The addition will include cardio equipment, dumbbell racks, hammer-strength weight equipment, an eight-station multi-jungle training unit and two fitness consultation rooms.

The center will pay for the project with capital reserves. The plan was designed by Architects West Inc. and Landmark Landscape Architects. The general contractor is Leone and Keeble Inc. Construction.

The $38 million Kroc Center opened in 2009.

The full-service office – the credit union’s third – will occupy 3,700 square feet with drive-thru lanes.

The branch will be staffed with five employees.
