Redskins’ Griffin stays involved

Griffin

Robert Griffin III found a way to get involved on the first day of the Washington Redskins’ training camp, even when he was supposed to be a spectator.

Barred from the main 11-on-11 drills in Richmond, Va., as he recovers from reconstructive knee surgery, Griffin nevertheless started chasing linebacker Bryan Kehl after Kehl intercepted a pass from just-for-now starter Kirk Cousins.

When the ball popped loose, Griffin scooped it up the fumble and took off downfield. The fans, who had been watching him mostly stand around during the drill, roared their approval.

“Even though he’s cleared, I’ve got to see it on the football field,” coach Mike Shanahan said.

Griffin was cleared by doctors late last week, but Shanahan said it will take two to three weeks for Griffin to get into “football shape.” Griffin will therefore be restricted to individual and 7-on-7 drills, at least initially.

Niners’ Brown fires agent after $2M mistake

San Francisco 49ers starting cornerback Tarell Brown voided a $2 million escalator in his contract after he chose not to participate in the team’s voluntary offseason program. Yet Brown said he learned of it via Twitter on Thursday because he didn’t know about that clause in the deal, and he then fired agent Brian Overstreet for the mistake.

He had been due to earn $2.925 million in salary for the 2013 season.
