Winery provides idyllic backdrop for symphony Soiree

Combining the spell of long summer nights with the elegance of the symphony, Soiree on the Edge features the Spokane Symphony, as conducted by Eckart Preu, at the picturesque Arbor Crest Winery in a celebration of new and old.

But this “edge” has a double meaning: It refers to both the event’s setting – the musicians will be arranged right on the ridge of the winery at dusk – and the adventurous tone of the musical selections.

Sprinkled among the traditional pieces by P.I. Tchaikovsky and J.S. Bach are works from more modern composers: You might hear a movement from Philip Glass’ “Glassworks,” for instance, or the haunting ensemble piece “Ptolemy’s Carousel” by Patrick David Clark.

“It’s one of our chances to let the musicians soar,” said Audrey Overstreet, public relations director for the symphony. “They enjoy not only playing the traditional classics, but also the edgier pieces.”

The unusual outdoor setting creates an ambience that complements the performance: “The sun sets as the music is playing,” Overstreet said, “and it’s really one of the most magical moments of summer.”

Arbor Crest’s wide variety of wines will be on hand for purchase, and those who plan to sit on the lawn are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs and picnic baskets to take advantage of the late summer setting.

Tickets are now available now at the winery and the Arbor Crest tasting room in River Park Square downtown.
