Some early surprises in softball tournaments

Regular season is history, the end-of-season double-elimination tournaments are underway to determine Spokane Valley Girls Softball League champions.

For the most part the first rounds of the four divisions went according to form, although there was a major upset in the 12U League. John L. Scott, ranked seventh in the tournament won twice, shocking No. 2 seeded Ameristar Meats 12-11.

Among other early surprises sixth-seeded teams beat teams ranked No. 3 in their respective brackets. Mega Wash outlasted Blue Rhino 16-11 in the 18U League, Hu Hot topped URM 8-6 in 14U and Early Dawn topped Testcomm 18-3 in 10U.

Hu Hot finished regular 18U season 10-0 and was four games ahead of its nearest foe.

Testcomm (9-0-1) and M.I.S.T. (9-1), top two finishers in 14U by three-plus games, won to open their tournament.

Regular season champ Chuck’s Girls (9-1 in 12U) won as expected and 10U unbeatens UNICEP and Hu Hot (both 10-0), continued on their collision course, UNICEP winning 19-3 and 19-8.
