G-Prep wins in first round

Gonzaga Prep held off a late Yakima Valley rally and won 6-5 in the first round of the Washington State American Legion AA baseball tournament at Murr Field Saturday in Walla Walla.

Gonzaga Prep took an early advantage with three runs in the first inning, thanks to three Yakima Valley errors.

In the third, Gonzaga Prep loaded the bases and Scott Morse, Ryan Cote and Ryan Gross all hit RBI-singles to give GP a commanding 6-0 advantage.

Yakima Valley got five runs in the sixth to close the gap. Gonzaga Prep’s Evan Lewis threw out a Yakima Valley runner at first base following a flyout to nip the rally.

Gonzaga Prep will play Bellingham today in the second round. Bellingham topped Olympia 9-4 in the first round.

Yakima 4, University 3: Yakima scored three runs in the seventh inning and edged University at Murr Field.

Kyle Bush hit a three-run double in the fifth to give University a 2-1 lead, but Yakima responded in the seventh.

Jeff Beaty took the loss after giving up four runs on four hits and walking seven in 6 1/3 innings.

University will play North Thurston in an elimination game today. North Thurston was blanked 13-0 by Eastlake.

Mt. Spokane 7, Moses Lake 2: Jake Leavey hit a three-run home run and Blake Macdonald hit a three-run triple and Mt. Spokane eased to the first-round win at Walla Walla Community College in Walla Walla.

Michael Walker pitched all seven innings for Mt. Spokane, allowing two unearned runs while striking out five.

Mt. Spokane will play Buckley-Enumclaw today at 4 p.m. at Walla Walla CC.

Walla Walla 14, Colville 2: Colville scored twice in the second to take the lead, but Walla Walla put up 10 runs in the third and eased to victory at WWCC.

Ali Buentello drove in four runs and Ryan Kimball added three RBIs for Walla Walla.

Colville will play Burlington today in an elimination game. Burlington was sent to the losers bracket after a 13-3 loss to Mason.
