He had been battling multiple myeloma for more than a year.
He was born in Spokane, the only child of Larry and Lucille Metler.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Linda; two daughters, Samantha Metler and Staci (Paul) Huffman; three grandchildren, Jessica and Sarah Huffman and Braeden Metler; and several cousins.
Don was extremely proud of his affiliation with the U.S. Navy where he attained the rank of Senior Chief Boatswain’s Mate.
After serving four years of active duty (mostly in the Pacific) he returned to Spokane where he joined the Navy Reserve and began work on a land survey crew.
He continued with land surveying for his entire career, eventually becoming part owner of the company.
His major interests and pleasures were his family, cooking, gardening (especially his prized dahlias) and wood working.
Whatever he attempted he soon became proficient, and his friends and family were beneficiaries of his expertise.
He had an uncanny knack for remembering the preferences of others, and went out of his way to make sure a meal or a homemade present suited the recipient.
A Memorial Party will be held on July 31, at 6:30 p.m. at the Sinto Senior Activity Center, W. 1124 Sinto.
