The Slice: To the Victors go Stewart’s spoils

Rich and Peggy Victor are big Rod Stewart fans.

So when the longtime rocker’s son started playing for the Spokane Chiefs a couple of years ago, it stoked the Moses Lake couple’s previously lukewarm interest in hockey. They started coming over to Spokane for weekend games, in part to watch Liam Stewart play.

They have visited with Liam’s mom, Rachel Hunter, a former Sports Illustrated swimsuit model who also attends Chiefs games.

And sometimes the Victors even go down to games in the Tri-Cities when the Chiefs are playing there.

But that’s all prelude to the story.

Last weekend, Rich and Peggy were in Las Vegas to attend a Rod Stewart performance at Caesars Palace. Their seats were right down front. They thought the singer might get a kick out of it if they wore their souvenir Liam Stewart Spokane Chiefs jerseys, authentically adorned with the young hockey player’s number and last name.

At one point during the show, Peggy took off her jersey – she had a T-shirt on underneath – and held it up so that the back (featuring “STEWART”) faced the stage.

The singer noticed, said Rich. He gave the couple a thumbs-up.

But it doesn’t end there.

If you are even vaguely familiar with Rod Stewart concerts, you probably know that the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer likes to kick soccer balls into the audience. The Caesars Palace show was no exception.

Rich came close to snagging a ball once or twice but came up empty-handed.

Then, about the time the singer was winding things up with “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy?” a tap came on the back of Rich’s shoulder. And there stood Liam Stewart. He smiled and said he thought he recognized the Victors from their good-seats attendance at Chiefs games.

He presented them with a soccer ball autographed by his famous dad.

Rich said that ball now occupies a place of honor in what he jokingly referred to as Peggy’s Rod Stewart shrine.
