Obituary: Smathers, Lucille Jon “Lucy”

Age 75

SMATHERS, Lucille Jon “Lucy” (Age 75) Passed away Saturday, July 27, 2013 at the Hospice House in Spokane, Washington.

Lucy was born in Colville, WA on March 24, 1938 and was the second of five children born to Francis and Geneva Schuerman.

In 1946, Francis and Geneva moved the family to Spokane where Lucy attended Rogers High School.

Lucy met and married Robert Louis Smathers (Bob) in 1967 in Spokane.

She had three children from a previous marriage, Linda Kelley, Terry Kelley and Lisa Kelley.

Bob had four children Robert, Donald, Janice, and Laurie from a previous marriage.

Gena was born to Bob and Lucy in 1971.

Bob and Lucy moved to a house and acreage on Little Spokane River Drive in north Spokane a year after they were married.

Lucy has been a homemaker for most of hers and Bob’s marriage.

As a homemaker, she provided a loving home for her four children and for her four step- children when they visited.

Lucy was passionate about gardening.

She planted and harvested a large garden every year for hers’ and Bob’s needs and gave excess produce away to her children and grandchildren.

Lucy was also into growing flowers all over her property; it was a colorful place in the springs and summers.

For years, Lucy has been involved in the Gardner’s of Spokane Club where she served as an officer in recent years.

She even involved some of her children and grandchildren in the club.

She coordinated the gathering of greens every fall for the purpose of making Christmas wreaths for a club fundraiser.

Lucy made wreaths for all members of the family who always looked forward to getting them for Christmas.

Lucy was also involved in organizing the club plant sale in the spring.

Lucy and Bob were regular hosts of the Schuerman/Smathers family reunion at their home in the summer.

This was an event that Lucy always looked forward to.

Lucy’s hobbies and interests besides gardening were bowling, playing cards, and putting puzzles together on her dining room table.

Lucy is survived by her four children Linda Kelley of Eugene, Oregon, Terry Kelley and wife Sandy of Elk, WA, Lisa Kelley of Spokane, and Gena Smathers of Spokane, four step-children, 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, brother Lee Schuerman of Spokane, brother Francis Schuerman and wife Ethel of Spokane, sister Judy Hall and husband Ed of Tacoma, WA, and brother Dick Schuerman and wife Lynda of Spokane.

Preceding her in death were her husband Robert Sr. and parents Francis and Geneva Schuerman.

A Funeral Service will be held Wednesday, July 31, 2:00 pm at the Heritage Funeral Chapel.
