Sandpipers, Stockton knock off Stars, 68-62

It was an all-Spokane final in the Spokane Summer Heat AAU girls basketball tournament final last week.

The Spokane Sandpipers held off the Spokane Stars Elite Blue 68-62 in the championship game.

The Sandpipers scored the game’s final six points to secure the title. Laura Stockton led the Sandpipers with 22 points.

The team members for the Sandpipers have been listed previously. Team members for the Stars are: Sydney Williams, Mariah Cunningham, Madison Hovren, Brooke Bailey, Morgan Hawley, Jessie Loera, McKenzie Peterson, Darby Pink and Jordan Rodriguez. Coaches are Ron Adams and Steve Ranniger.

• The Northwest Blazers Orange took second in a national tournament in Nashville, Tenn.

The Orange won six straight games over four days before falling in overtime to the Cal Stars Nike. It’s the third straight year the Oregon squad reached the championship game.

Orange players Chandler Smith, Sira Toure, Pele Gianotti and Brittany McPhee were named to the all-tournament team.

The Northwest Blazers Future won six straight games culminated by a win over the Alabama Flight in the title game of the All-Star bracket.

The Northwest Blazers Heat went 6-1 in the Elite bracket to take fifth and the Blazers Black went 6-1 to win the consolation finals.

Shooting

In her first year shooting Skeet and Sporting Clays, Abbi Denmark of Freeman finished ninth overall in the nation out of 281 girls and third overall in the junior varsity division at the 2013 SCTP National Clary Target championships at the World Shooting and Recreation Complex in Sparta, Ill.

Denmark is one of three girls in the nation that has been invited to the Junior Olympic Development Camp for Skeet at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., next month.

Vanessa Holland and Seth Jones, both from Kettle Falls, matched up with three shooters from Tennessee to take home first in the Open Division for trap. Holland scored 190 out of 200 and Jones broke 187.

Archery

Logan Bunker of Spokane, who will be a freshman at Ferris this fall, won his third national championship in six months.

Bunker won the grand national championship at the USA Archery outdoor national championships at Hamilton, Ohio.

After the first two days of competition, Bunker was in second overall. On the third day he combined with other shooters to win a team title. On the fourth day, during face-to-face shooting, Bunker defeated four competitors to seal the national title.

Coaching jobs

Priest River is looking for head coaches in volleyball and boys basketball.

Track

Lauren McCluskey of Pullman placed seventh in the 15-16 year old heptathlon at the USA Track and Field championships at Greensboro, N.C.

McCluskey, who will be a junior next year, was the Washington 2A state champ in the high jump and placed second in the 100-meter hurdles as a freshman. A strained hamstring kept her from competing at state last spring.
