North Idaho Reads wants family recipes

Share a favorite family recipe for the North Idaho Reads project.

Library organizers are collecting unusual or traditional recipes for an online cookbook inspired by this year’s North Idaho Reads book by Erica Bauermeister, “The School of Essential Ingredients.” Each year, patrons are encouraged to read one book and themed programs are offered.

Submit a recipe online at northidahoreads.org. Include any family memories with the recipe. Participating libraries include Coeur d’Alene, Plummer and Wallace public libraries, and the Community Library Network branches in Boundary and Bonner counties.

Bauermeister will visit in October and programs planned for August and September include a pie contest, wild mushroom hunting, barbecue demos, a cookie contest and tomato tasting. Events will be listed on the North Idaho Reads website as dates and details are confirmed.

Native culture camp offered

Members of the Bitterroot-Salish Tribe of Montana and four area chefs will teach children about native culture through its art and food at the eighth annual Art on the Edge camp.

Camp will be 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Monday through Aug. 9 at Coeur d’Alene Harding Family Center for first- through sixth-graders. It is $65 per camper. Children will learn dances, do beadwork and make dance shields. The chefs will help the kids make Native American dishes. Participating chefs include Adam Hegsted of the Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort, Ryan Stoy of the Cellar at 317 Sherman, Viljo Basso of Syringa and Troy Chandler from Bonzai Bistro. Idaho Farmers Market week starts Sunday

Celebrate Idaho Farmers Market Week on Aug. 10 in Moscow when Mayor Nancy Chaney will give out “I Shop at the Farmers Market” tote bags to the first 75 shoppers.

There also will be a pickling demonstration at 10 a.m. at the city of Moscow tent at Friendship Square, offered through a grant from Jarden Foods, the makers of Ball home canning products. For details about other farmers markets and events, go to www.agri.idaho.gov for a listing.
