Obituary: Hamp, Martha Marie (Schultz)

HAMP, Martha Marie (Schultz) Passed away Sunday, May 19, 2013, in Spokane. Martha Schultz was born North of Spokane on the family farm in Dennison in June 1919, second daughter to George and Anna Schultz. Martha Schultz married Fred Hamp in November 1940. Martha and Fred lived on Big Meadows Road, and then Medical Lake before moving to the North side of Spokane in the mid 40s. In the mid 70s, they built a home on land where she grew up. Martha was an active member of The Grange, Spokane County and Washington State Homemaker Councils (Washington State President), and the Spokane President’s Council (President). She was also chaperone for the Spokane Interstate Fair’s Fairest of the Fair Royal Court and became the first female member of the Spokane Interstate Fair Board. For many years, Martha Hamp organized multi-year reunions for Riverside High School held each May. Martha was a proud 77-year member of The Grange. She held many offices including Master (President) of Valley Prairie Grange and Home Economic Chair for Spokane County Pomona Grange. Martha was recognized by Spokane County for her 50 years of volunteer work as precinct committeewoman. She was a member and active volunteer of the Gardeners of Spokane and was elected their first female president. Martha will be missed by her family and friends. Martha’s first love, Fred, passed away in 1975. In addition, to her young daughter Betty, Martha was also preceded in death by her parents, her older sister Elsie Schultz Bowles and nephews Jimmie McBride and Al (Bud) Bowles. She is survived by her son Duane Hamp (Chris) in Spokane and her daughter Judy Hamp Hossner (Steve) in Poulsbo. She has two grandchildren, Charles Hossner (Elizabeth) and Alicia Hamp Buckles (Jeremiah) both in western Washington. She has one great-grandson with a second great-grandson due in early June. Martha is also survived by her younger sister, Dorine McBride, several nieces and nephews and their families. Burial was private. Please join family and friends at her Grange Graveside Service on June 22, at 1 PM, at Spokane’s Riverside Cemetery.
