Out & About: Free fishing offered in Idaho, Washington

OUTDO – Washington and Idaho are among the many states offering free fishing – no fishing license required – next weekend.

Idaho’s Free Fishing Day is Saturday while Washington will double the fun by allowing anglers to fish without a license Saturday and Sunday.

Other requirements waived next weekend at Washington fishing waters and access sites include the Discover Pass, Columbia River salmon/ steelhead endorsement, and two-pole endorsement.

All other rules apply.

Montana offers Free Fishing on Father’s Day weekend, June 15-16.

U.S. team shooters at free youth clinic

OUTBLAST – A free full-day outdoors clinic on a variety of skills is scheduled for youths under 18 Saturday at the Colville Gun Club. The session will be followed next Sunday by archery and clay-target shooting clinics with members of the U.S. Shooting Team.

Saturday’s free session topics include wildlife conservation, clay-target shooting, archery, coaching, fundraising, plus a free lunch and prizes.

Sunday’s session, limited to 50 students, focuses on skeet, trap and archery. Cost: $150.

Applications for $5,000 endowments will be available for new high school or collegiate shooting teams, said Fort Colville Gun Club organizer Howie Kubik.

Trout Derby set at Sprague Lake

OUTFISH – More than $900 in prizes is waiting for anglers who catch the biggest fish and luck out in the raffles at the 2013 Sprague Lake Trout Derby on June 8.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for kids under 17. No fishing license is required since it’s Washington’s Free Fishing Weekend.

Tickets will be available the day of the derby at the two resorts on the lake:

Four Seasons Campground Resort, (509) 257-2332, on the northwest end of the lake.

Sprague Lake Resort, (509) 259-7060, at the east end of the resort just outside the town of Sprague.

The main derby station and weigh-in site will be situated just outside Sprague Lake Resort.

Both resorts offer camping, boat rentals, boat launching, docks and tackle.

Bird dog clinic and fun hunt scheduled

OUTFLUSH – A clinic for owners of pointing dogs of all ages and abilities is set by the  Spokane Bird Dog Association for 8 a.m.-noon on June 8 at the club’s  Espanola training grounds west of Medical Lake.
