Barrister wins Legends honor

Roasted Halibut with Lemon-Caper Butter.

Winemakers Michael White and Greg Lipsker of Barrister Winery in Spokane have been chosen to make the 2013 Legends blend wine for the Walter Clore Wine and Culinary Center.

The center in Prosser, Wash. is named for the late Walter J. Clore and promotes Washington wines and food. Clore is known as the “father of the Washington wine” and began studying vinifera grapes and the potential for growing them in Washington soils in 1937.

The blend created by Barrister Winery commemorates this year’s inductee into the Washington Wine Hall of Fame and will be released on Aug. 9 at the 2013 Legends of Washington Wine Gala. Money raised by the event will support the center. There is more information on the gala available at www.theclorecenter.org or by calling (509) 786-1000.

Meet your local farmer

Meet Deer Park dairy farmer Stephanie Littrel from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday at Yokes Fresh Market, 9329 E. Montgomery Ave.

Littrel will be there to talk about her dairy operation for the “Meet Your Local Dairy Farmer” program. Littrel’s grandfather started Dunrenton Ranch (as in “done renting”) in 1953. She works with her husband and son to operate the 200-cow dairy with two other employees. The milk is shipped and sold through Darigold.

There will be samples and coupons, and shoppers who purchase three or more dairy products will receive a free copy of “Fresh” magazine. The magazine includes more than three dozen recipes. Look inside today’s Food section on page C6 for a recipe from the magazine for Roasted Halibut with Lemon-Caper Butter.
