Recommended The NHL competition committee will recommend making visors mandatory for all players entering the league. Also at Tuesday’s meeting, hybrid icing was recommended for testing during the 2013-14 preseason, as were shallower nets. Any changes must first be approved by the league’s board of governors.

Announced A highly rated defensive lineman from California who signed a letter of intent in February to play football for Notre Dame has changed his mind and plans to enroll at UCLA. Eddie Vanderdoes, 6-foot-3, 285 pounds from Auburn, Calif., issued a statement saying he wanted to remain close to home. Coach Brian Kelly issued a statement confirming Vanderdoes will not play for Notre Dame, but said the school would not release him from his letter of intent. That means Vanderdoes cannot play for UCLA until 2014.

• Montana State men’s basketball coach Brad Huse said two of his assistant coaches will not return next season. Huse said Aerick Sanders has accepted a position at New Mexico State after one season with the Bobcats. Scott Carson won’t return for a sixth season. Huse says national searches for the two openings are underway.

• British Cycling says its president, Brian Cookson, will challenge Pat McQuaid for the presidency of the International Cycling Union in a bid to restore the sport’s reputation. McQuaid, who has led the UCI for eight years, is seeking a third four-year term in September despite criticism of his leadership in the Lance Armstrong doping case. Cookson said the “first priority for the new UCI president must be to change the way that anti-doping is managed so that people can have confidence in the sport.”

Died A Bentley University basketball player has died after collapsing at a recreational summer league game at a Watertown, Mass., playground. Joe Glynn, 19, was pronounced dead at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Mass., after collapsing at about 7:30 p.m. Monday. The death remains under investigation but does not appear suspicious, police said.
