SPOKANE – The city is seeking applications for the 2013 Mayor’s Urban Design Awards. Projects must have been completed between Jan. 1, 2008, and Aug. 1, 2013. Applications are due by noon on Aug. 1. For more details, go to www.spokaneplanning. org/designreview.

Fire District 8 meeting planned

VALLEYFORD – Spokane County Fire District 8 commissioners will hold a special meeting at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Station 82, 12100 E. Palouse Highway.

The meeting is a strategic planning retreat for the board and senior staff.

The public is welcome to attend.

Camp Fire honors G-Prep student

SPOKANE – Camp Fire has awarded Julia Jean Brown the Wohelo Award, which is its highest achievement award for youth.

Wohelo stands for work, health and love and is awarded to teens in grades 9 through 12. Brown won the award for her more than 1,000 hours of volunteer work in support of Camp Fire and Second Harvest Food Bank.

Among many activities, she helped Tom’s Turkey Drive not just by collecting food but also by dressing up as a turkey to generate awareness for the annual event.

Brown is a junior at Gonzaga Preparatory School and also serves on the Chase Youth Commission and other youth-focused boards.

Summer Parkways needs volunteers

SOUTH HILL – Summer Parkways, a four-mile carless route closed off in the Comstock/Manito Neighborhood on June 19 from 6-9 p.m., is looking for volunteers to help with the event.
