Education Notebook: St. George’s teacher wins grant

John Nord, a math teacher at St. George’s School, has won a $6,000 grant in the Hilton HHonors Teacher Treks Travel Grant Program.

Nord was one of 15 teachers awarded a grant to travel and experience firsthand the subjects they teach, with the goal to enrich curriculum and inspire students to explore the world. In addition, St. George’s will receive a $2,500 donation to use for cultural activities or improvements to the school.

With the grant, Nord plans to journey to Italy this summer, to follow in the footsteps of Galileo and explore Galileo’s life, his culture and thinking. Nord will visit Florence, Pisa, Venice, and Rome. During his travels, he plans to recreate several of Galileo’s discoveries and document his results.

According to a release from St. George’s, Nord wrote in his grant proposal, “Galileo’s life, learning, and thinking serve as a perfect microcosm of our world. By reliving it visually, by absorbing the culture, by re-creating it digitally, and re-working the original experiments in the original settings, creating opportunities for my students to actually participate, my students will better their understanding and thinking about our modern, international, interconnected world.”
