From Elkfest to Bennett, and plenty in between

School is out for summer. For some. For others, the end comes next week. Regardless, June is here, and the next 12 weeks stretch out ahead of us.

For swimming fans, there’s still a bit of a wait. The city of Spokane will open the community pools on Monday, June 17. Folks in the Valley will get a two-day advance, taking the plunge on June 15.

Still, this weekend is hopping with events. Chief among them is Elkfest, in Browne’s Addition, where indie music will reign supreme. Over at the Convention Center, “Discover the Dinosaurs” is sure to appeal to paleontologists of all ages, with as many as 60 replica dinosaurs on display and plenty of dino-related events on the schedule. On Saturday, Felts Field in east Spokane takes center stage with its third Neighbor Day celebration. A wide variety of planes will be on display for aviation fans of all ages. In the surrounding areas, there’s the annual Flag Day celebration in Fairfield and the Combine Demolition Derby in Lind.

And finally, next Thursday, there’ll be a genuine musical legend in our midst. Tony Bennett, the crooner behind such classics as “I Left My Heart in San Francisco,” “Rags to Riches” and “Steppin’ Out With My Baby,” will be at Northern Quest Resort & Casino. Bennett, who turns 87 in August, released “Viva Duets” last year.
