Rangers’ Kirkman sidelined by recurrence of lymphoma
The Texas Rangers put left-hander Michael Kirkman on the 15-day disabled list Sunday after a recurrence of lymphoma around his right triceps. The team says a complete recovery is expected.
The Rangers said Kirkman will begin treatment shortly and will be able to participate in baseball activities.
Kirkman, a former Spokane Indian, was initially diagnosed in January 2012 and continued to pitch while undergoing radiation treatments last year. He said the recurrence was found 2 millimeters away from the original spot.
Kirkman was 0-2 with an 8.18 ERA in 25 games. In his last showing Thursday he gave up a game-ending three-run homer to Boston’s David Ortiz.
Also Sunday, the Rangers put right-hander Alexi Ogando on the 15-day DL with a sore shoulder, recalled right-hander Josh Lindblom from Triple-A Round Rock and purchased the contract of righty Kyle McLellan.
Right-hander Joakim Soria was moved from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL to make room on the roster for McLellan.
Rangers manager Ron Washington said Lindblom, 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA in one start for the Rangers this season, was a candidate to start today.
In five years with St. Louis, McLellan went 19-23 with a 3.69 ERA in 261 games.
Arizona’s McCarthy put on medication
Arizona’ Brandon McCarthy is taking medication and says he’s confident he’ll be fine after he collapsed at a restaurant with a seizure related to the life-threatening head injury he sustained when he was struck in the head by a line drive off the bat of Erick Aybar while pitching last September 5.
The Diamondbacks’ right-hander underwent extensive examinations at the Mayo Clinic after the incident Monday. He was having dinner with his wife at a Phoenix restaurant when he passed out.
McCarthy says he will be taking the anti-seizure medicine for the foreseeable future.
Dodgers place Lilly on DL again
The Dodgers have placed left-hander Ted Lilly on the 15-day disabled list because of a neck sprain.
This is Lilly’s third trip this season to the DL, which is retroactive to June 5. He has made only five starts, going 0-2 with a 5.09 ERA.
