Banner collection: Sharon Berger, 67, places small American flags on the posts surrounding her home in Ford, Wash., on Thursday in anticipation of Flag Day. Berger said she collects the flags her father, a career veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, receives in the mail from veterans organizations. With each passing year, the number of flags has grown, so that now, she has most of the front fence-line covered. Berger’s husband served with the Marine Corps, and her brother served as a tunnel rat in Vietnam. (Tyler Tjomsland)
