Local students announced as scholarship recipients

The West Valley Education Foundation has named its 2013 scholarship recipients.

The following students each received a $1,000 scholarship: From West Valley High School, Thomas Dedera, Gail Gallaher, Austin Luhn, Shaley Martin, Sarah Marro, Jessica Mitchell, Mikayla Nickerson-Scully, Hailey Ortiz, Ellen Postlewait, Alex Preston, Anne Rowley, Jacqueline Swanson, Kaylee Tate and Kathryn Wee. From Contract Based Education, Chelsea VanSchoonhoven.

Two students won the Liberg Memorial Scholarship of $500 each: Alex Stutzman from West Valley and Dina Chebotareva from Spokane Valley High School.

Invent Washington winners

Students from East Farms STEAM Magnet School in the East Valley School District recently competed in Invent Washington, a regional and state competition that incorporates engineering and math.

The state competition was June 1 at St. George’s School.

Third-grader Anna Wright won first place in games. Emma Kurtzhall and Melissa Bare, also third-graders, took home second place in games, and third-graders Trinity Levschel and Mahina Cross came home with third place in games.

Fifth-graders Brooklyn Gulliford, Danyelle Plunket and Alondig Rodriquez won first place in adaptations, and David Bare, a fifth-grader, came in second place in adaptations.

Marcy Williams is the third-grade students’ teacher. Celeste Simone teaches the fifth-graders.
