Two hospital CEOs announce exits

Deaconess, Valley hospitals both have searches underway

Deaconess Hospital and Valley Hospital are searching for new leaders after both CEOs announced their departures.

Deaconess CEO Bill Gilbert left the hospital in April after accepting a corporate position with the hospital’s owner, Community Health Systems.

Dennis Barts, chief executive at Valley Hospital, will be leaving in July to be the CEO of a hospital in Boulder, Colo.

Both administrators were named CEO of their respective hospitals in 2009.

Barts was previously employed with the Rockwood Health System. In a release announcing his departure, he cited family and professional reasons for the move.

“Valley Hospital has a dedicated team of employees and physicians who are committed to excellence for every patient,” Barts said in the release. “They will keep this hospital on the right path to continue growing as an exceptional place for patients to receive care.”

Under Gilbert’s leadership, Deaconess became a Level III trauma center and is the only hospital in the market to have earned national accreditations as a Chest Pain Center, Primary Stroke Center and Bariatric Center of Excellence.

“I know Deaconess will continue to grow in every measure of success,” Gilbert said.

National searches to fill both positions are underway.

Rod Schumacher, assistant vice president of operations for Community Health Systems Professional Services Corp., is serving as interim CEO of Deaconess during the transition.
