Beavers eliminate Louisville

COLLEGE BASEBALL: Oregon State used a seven-run fourth inning to break open the game against mistake-prone Louisville, and the Beavers stayed alive in the College World Series with an 11-4 victory on Monday in Omaha, Neb.

The No. 3 national seed Beavers (51-12) play another elimination game Wednesday against Indiana. The Cardinals (51-14) committed four errors against the Beavers and 13 in their last seven games.

Ben Wetzler (10-1) allowed three runs in 6 1/3 innings. Jeff Thompson (11-2) lasted 3 2/3 innings, with three of the seven runs against him unearned.

Oregon State scored the most runs allowed by Louisville this season. It was the highest-scoring game at the CWS in the three years it’s been played at TD Ameritrade Park.

Andy Peterson went 3 for 4 and Max Gordon had two hits and two RBIs out of the No. 9 hole for the Beavers.

Mississippi State, meanwhile, took control of its bracket with a 5-4 victory over Indiana.

The Bulldogs (50-18) need one win to reach next week’s best-of-three finals. They’re off until Friday, when they’ll play Indiana (49-15) or Oregon State.

Assistants following Drew to Milwaukee

NBA: Bob Bender and Nick Van Exel are following Larry Drew to Milwaukee.

The Bucks announced Monday that Bender and Van Exel will be assistants on Drew’s staff. Bender also was an assistant during Drew’s three years as head coach in Atlanta, while Van Exel was the Hawks’ player development instructor from 2010-12.

Drew says the two were “important pieces” of his staff in Atlanta and will be dedicated to teaching Milwaukee’s young players.

Bender spent the past nine years in Atlanta after two years as an assistant in Philadelphia. As a college coach, he led Washington to four consecutive NCAA tournament appearances (1996-99) and was Pac-10 coach of the year in 1996.Van Exel played 13 years in the NBA. He was an All-Star in 1998.

• Iverson accused of abducting his children: The Allen Iverson saga has added another alarming chapter. The former 76ers star is being accused by his ex-wife, Tawanna Iverson, of abducting his own children, according to several media reports. The website TMZ first reported the story.

Tawanna Iverson filed court documents in Atlanta claiming that her ex-husband failed to return their five children, who range in age from age 3 to 16, after a five-day vacation to Charlotte, N.C.

Iverson is fighting the allegations in court, TMZ reported.

Iverson did not return them on May 26, she said. Tawanna said she tried to set up an exchange at a neutral site on June 4, but Iverson never showed up.

Tawanna Iverson, who has sole custody of the children, wants the courts to force him to bring them back. She contends that Iverson never went to North Carolina and has the children staying at a hotel in Georgia.The 38-year-old former star has wasted millions of dollars. His ex-wife has said he has missed every child support payment since January, when their divorce was finalized. Iverson owes her $40,000 in child support, she contends.

Nigeria tops Tahiti behind hat trick

SOCCER: Nigeria rolled to a 6-1 victory at Confederations Cup over Tahiti, which was making its debut at a major FIFA tournament.

Nnamdi Oduamadi scored a hat trick for the African champions, while Elderson Echiejile added two more.

Still, the team from the South Pacific may have had the game’s best moment.

Jonathan Tehau headed the ball into the net early in the second half, cutting the deficit to 3-1. The Tahitians then celebrated by pretending to row a boat together.

Police arrest driver in fatal Oregon accident

MISCELLANY: Police in Oregon say they have arrested the driver they say fatally struck a man trying to dribble a soccer ball 10,000 miles from Seattle to Brazil for the World Cup.

Scott Van Hiatt, of Neskowin, was arrested on a charge of criminally negligent homicide.

Richard Swanson, of Seattle, planned to dribble the ball for more than a year through 11 countries before reaching Sao Paolo, Brazil, where the opener of the World Cup soccer tournament will be played on June 12, 2014.

He was struck from behind by a pickup while walking south along busy U.S. 101 near Lincoln City on May 14.

Hiatt was indicted by a Lincoln County grand jury last week. He is jailed on $50,000 bail.
