Indians ride offense to first win

VANCOUVER, B.C. – Talk about an offensive breakthrough for the Spokane Indians.

The Indians scored eight runs in the fifth inning and cruised to their first win of the young Northwest League baseball season with a 10-1 rout of the Vancouver Canadians.

The Indians did something different in their fourth game that they hadn’t done in their season-opening homestand. They scored first. With two outs in the fourth, Cam Schiller reached base on a double and scored on a single by Ryan Cordell.

Then the outburst occurred in the fifth for Spokane (1-3). The Indians sent 14 to the plate and the Canadians (1-3) had two pitching changes.

Schiller had a two-run triple for the Indians’ big hit in the inning. Spokane also took advantage of four walks and two wild pitches in the crazy uprising.

Spokane’s starter, right-hander David Ledbetter, allowed just one hit in three innings. He gave way to Sam Wolff, who pitched a hitless inning before being relieved in the fifth.

Spokane added a final run in the ninth when Hirotoshi Onaka walked with the bases loaded.

Indians pitchers – Ledbetter, Wolff, Travis Dean, Justin Sprenger and Abel De Los Santos – combined to limit Vancouver to five hits. Spokane didn’t commit an error.

Marcus Greene went 3 for 3 with an RBI for Spokane. He also reached twice on walks.

The teams play the middle game of a three-game series tonight. Spokane returns home Thursday to begin a five-game series against Boise.
