In brief: Adoption fees waived for cats

SPOKANE COUNTY – June is Adopt a Shelter Cat month at the Spokane Humane Society, which is waiving adoption fees for all cats older than 12 months until June 30.

Each cat will receive vaccinations and a microchip. Spaying or neutering is also included.

The shelter is at 6607 N. Havana St.

Fire District 9 plans open houses

SPOKANE COUNTY – Spokane County Fire District 9, which stretches above the northern boundaries of Spokane and Spokane Valley, is holding a series of open houses during the summer.

People can get a tour of the station and meet firefighters. Children can meet Smokey Bear and have their picture taken inside a firetruck.

Upcoming open house dates are: June 25: Station 98, 6606 N. Regal St., 6-9 p.m.; July 20: Station 93, 9915 W. Charles Road, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.; July 23: Station 94, 7017 N. Jensen Road, 6-8 p.m.; July 27: Station 91, 616 W. Hastings Road, 10 a.m.-noon; Aug. 1: Station 96, 11019 N. Forker Road, 5-8 p.m.; Aug. 10: Station 99, 9105 N. Whitehouse St., 1-3 p.m.; Aug. 17: Station 95, 3028 W. Strong Road, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.; Aug. 22: Station 97, 15222 N. Charles Road, 6-8 p.m.

LIBERTY LAKE – The Liberty Lake Library now offers free downloadable music through Freegal Music.

Library users can download up to three free songs every week. Library users must download free mobile apps from the Apple App Store or Google Play or access the free music through the library’s website at www.libertylakewa.gov/ library.

The new feature is offered through the Cooperative Information Network of libraries.

Soap Box Derby to run Saturday

LIBERTY LAKE – Spokane East Rotary will sponsor Liberty Lake’s sixth annual Soap Box Derby on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Pavillion Park, 727 N. Molter Road.

The proceeds of the event benefit Spokane Guilds School, Buddy Ball (baseball for special needs children), and the HOPE School.

Special needs children will be paired with a volunteer driver in a soap box derby car.

Coca-Cola grant goes to top park

SPOKANE COUNTY – The Coca-Cola Co. is asking parkgoers across the country to vote for their favorite park by checking in online when they do an activity there.

Parks compete for a $100,000 recreational grant that will be awarded later this year. Park users can check in via the applications MapMyFitness and Foursquare or by going online at coke.com/parks and typing in a ZIP code to look up the park.

Credit score topic of STCU workshop

SPOKANE COUNTY – Spokane Teachers Credit Union is presenting a free workshop on how to protect your credit score on July 31, from 6-7 p.m. at the North Spokane Library, 44 E. Hawthorne Road.

Ron’s to host hot rods July 6

SPOKANE VALLEY – Ron’s Drive-Inn, 12502 E. Sprague Ave., will present a hot rod show and burger eating contest July 6 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The proceeds of the event will benefit Greater Spokane County Meals on Wheels.

The burger eating contest starts at 2 p.m. and contestants will try to eat as many burgers as possible in five minutes. Contestants will get a limited-edition T-shirt. The cost to enter is $25 in advance or $30 the day of the event.

The first-place winner will receive $200, the second-place winner $100, and the third-place winner $50.

Send-off reception for Kyle Smith

SPOKANE – The Salvation Army is hosting a goodbye reception for Kyle and Lisa Smith on Tuesday, starting at 5:30 p.m.

Kyle Smith is the outgoing executive director of the local Salvation Army organization.

The reception features speakers and pictures as well as refreshments and hors d’oeuvres. The reception will be in the Salvation Army Fellowship Hall, 222 E. Indiana Ave.
