Oregon State knocks Indiana out of CWS
College baseball: Matt Boyd pitched a four-hitter and struck out 11 and Oregon State (52-12) made a fourth-inning sacrifice fly stand for a 1-0 victory over Indiana (49-16) in the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., Wednesday night.
Oregon State scored in the fourth when Kavin Keyes singled, went to third on Ryan Barnes’ double and came home on Jake Rodriguez’s sacrifice fly to right.
The Beavers face Mississippi State on Friday needing to beat the Bulldogs twice to reach next week’s finals.
Italy rallies to deny Japan at Confed Cup
Soccer: Italy rallied from a two-goal deficit to beat Japan 4-3, earning a spot in the Confederations Cup semifinals.
First-half substitute Sebastian Giovinco scored the winner in the 86th minute of an entertaining match at the Arena Pernambuco in Recife, Brazil, pounding home a cross from Claudio Marchisio.
Japan scored twice in the opening 33 minutes.
• Neymar guides Brazil past Mexico: Neymar scored one goal and set up another for Jo to lift Brazil to a 2-0 win over Mexico in Fortaleza, Brazil, and secure a spot in the Confederations Cup semifinals for the host nation.
In the final round of group matches on Saturday, Italy will face host Brazil in Salvador and Japan meets Mexico in Belo Horizonte.
Nadal seeded No. 5 for Wimbledon
Tennis: Rafael Nadal will be seeded No. 5 at Wimbledon, setting up the possibility of a quarterfinal match against Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic or Andy Murray.
The All England Club released the seedings for this year’s championships, with the top five in the ATP rankings remaining in their positions.
Djokovic is No. 1, followed by Murray, Federer, David Ferrer and Nadal.
Nadal dropped to No. 5 in the rankings after the French Open, despite beating Ferrer to win the tournament for a record eighth time.
The women’s seedings follow the WTA rankings, with Serena Williams at No. 1.
The tournament starts Monday in London. The draw will be held Friday.
• Kuznetsova withdraws from Wimbledon: Two-time Grand Slam winner Svetlana Kuznetsova has pulled out of Wimbledon because of an abdominal strain.
The Russian was seeded No. 26 at the All England Club. Her withdrawal moves 33rd-ranked Klara Zakopalova of the Czech Republic into the No. 32 seed.
Moore powers Lynx in rout of Mercury
Miscellany: Maya Moore had 26 points, 16 rebounds and five assists to lead Minnesota to an 80-69 victory over the Mercury in Phoenix.
Diana Taurasi scored 28 points for the Mercury, who missed 16 of their first 21 shots and finished at just 34 percent. Rookie sensation Britney Griner had 10 points and seven rebounds for Phoenix.
• Homicide ruled for man found near home of Patriots TE: A man found dead in an industrial park about a mile from New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez’s home had been killed, a prosecutor said.
The state medical examiner identified the man as 27-year-old Odin Lloyd and ruled he was a homicide victim, Bristol District Attorney Samuel Sutter’s office said. Lloyd’s family said he was a semi-pro football player with a connection to Hernandez.
Sports Illustrated, citing an unidentified source, reported Tuesday that Hernandez was not believed to be a suspect in what was being treated then as a possible homicide.
SI also reported that the link between Hernandez and the case was a rented Chevrolet Suburban with Rhode Island plates for which police had been searching. The Associated Press could not independently confirm the report.
• IAAF says Jamaican case a ‘lesser’ offense: The IAAF says the doping case involving Jamaican sprint star Veronica Campbell-Brown appears to involve a “lesser” offense, meaning possible unintentional use of a banned substance.
The three-time Olympic gold medalist was suspended by Jamaica’s national federation pending an investigation into a positive drug test which came up positive for a banned diuretic at a meet in May.
• Hundreds show respect for late driver: Sprint Cup drivers Kasey Kahne, Brad Keselowski and Greg Biffle were among more than 800 people who attended the funeral service for NASCAR driver Jason Leffler in Cornelius, N.C.
Leffler was killed a week ago when his sprint car crashed into a wall at Bridgeport Speedway in New Jersey.
No coffin was present during the hour-long service for Leffler won two Nationwide Series races during his NASCAR career.
