In brief: Wetland meeting will be Tuesday

SPOKANE COUNTY – The Spokane County Utilities Division will host a public meeting to provide information on a wetland restoration project on the Saltese Flats.

The meeting will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at Valley Real Life Ministries, 1831 S. Barker Road.

The Saltese Flats are just south of the Spokane Valley city limits and east of Barker Road. The area was once a lake, but it was drained for farming and ranching in the late 1800s.

The wetland restoration plan includes the redirection of existing runoff and construction is tentatively planned to begin in 2014.

Milfoil treatment planned next week

NEWMAN LAKE – Newman Lake will be treated for milfoil next week.

Treatment of the invasive aquatic plant is tentatively planned for Tuesday, weather permitting, and people should plan to stay off the lake until Friday to allow the chemicals time to work.

The $32,000 project is being done by Spokane County. A map of the treatment area is available online at www.nlfczd.org.

Free summer meals in Fairfield

FAIRFIELD – The town of Fairfield is again putting on a summer meal program for children.

Lunch is served from noon to 1 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays at the Fairfield Community Center, 304 E. Main St.

The meals are free for children younger than 18. The program continues through Aug. 1, with the exception of July 4.

Tuesday Council meeting canceled

SPOKANE VALLEY – The Spokane Valley City Council meeting scheduled for Tuesday has been canceled so council members can attend an Association of Washington Cities conference in the Tri-Cities.

The next council meeting is scheduled for July 2.
