East takes 2 of 3 in All-State girls

Reardan’s Chantel Heath got the 17th annual Washington/North Idaho All-State Girls Basketball games off to a great start for the East.

Heath scored 10 points while garnering MVP honors, as the East Bs cruised to a 75-56 win over the West Bs Saturday in the first of three games played at the HUB in Spokane Valley.

The East Bs also received a game-high 15 points from Colton’s Paige Vincent, as well as 14 and 12 from the Colfax tandem of Nicole Sheer and Taylor Larsen, respectively.

In the second game, the East 1As, who had 12 players score, beat the West 1As 88-50.

Brewster’s Chandler Smith finished with 15 points and nine rebounds and was chosen the game’s MVP.

Cara Staggs of Okanogan scored 19 points for the East.

After the first two setbacks, the West took the win in the final game.

Rallying from a three-point halftime deficit, the West 2As knocked off the East 2A squad 78-71.

Sidney Rielly of Everett was selected as MVP of the 2A game after finishing with 18 points and collecting nine rebounds.

Football

The West rolled to a 30-6 win over the East in the Washington State 2A/1A/B All-State game Saturday at East Valley High School in Yakima.

The West piled up 432 total yards – 184 on the ground and 248 in the air – and scored all four of its touchdowns during its seven possessions in the first half.

Even with a running game that managed only 21 total yards, the East had chances. West Valley’s Tyler Stavnes connected with Juston Lind of Othello on a 67-yard scoring play that drew the East within 14-6 early in the second period. But that was all the East would get.

Stavnes finished with 148 yards through the air with one interception to match his one touchdown throw.

Chewelah’s Derek Smith carried the ball for 28 yards rushing to lead the East.

• Friday night, the East defeated the West 38-21 in the Washington State 3A/4A All-State game at Lions Stadium in Moses Lake.

Bothell’s Danny Wilson scored on a 2-yard run in the first quarter to put the West up 7-0 before the East scored 31 unanswered points to take a 31-7 lead at halftime.

The West scored twice in the third quarter on two long passes. The first came on a 50-yard-plus pass to Marysville-Pilchuck receiver Kyle Nobach and the second on a 60-yard-plus pass to Glacier Peak’s Sean Elledge.

West head coach Tom Tri said he called the same play on both scores. The only difference was that the plays were run to opposite directions.

The East added another touchdown before the end of the game to make up the final margin.
