Obituary: Peterson, Freda Mae

Age 77

PETERSON, Freda Mae (Age 77) Freda Mae Koehler Peterson was born on August 27, 1935 to Fred and Rose (Gonser) Koehler in Deer Park, Washington; she passed away peacefully on June 10, 2013.

Known for her loving and giving spirit, she will be missed greatly by her family and friends.

Freda graduated from Deer Park High School in 1953.

She then attended Whitworth College where she pursued a degree in religion.

She finished her time at Whitworth early in order to marry Robert Peterson on July 5, 1956.

They settled in Deer Park where they raised four children.

Freda was a lifelong member of the Deer Park United Methodist Church.

She was active in the state and local chapters of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union (WCTU) and United Methodist Women’s Group.

She served in many positions of church leadership and was particularly committed to working with the children of the church.

She was a person of deep personal faith and began each day with a time of devotion and prayer.

In addition to her church work, Freda was active in the community.

She served briefly on the Planning Commission for the City of Deer Park.

She was also an avid supporter of the school district’s Band Boosters and drill team, Parent Teacher Association (PTA), served many times as a Room Mother as well as many of the sports activities in which her children participated.

In addition to the time and care she devoted to her family, her church, and her community, Freda had several interests of her own.

She loved to garden, draw, paint and sing.

Freda is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Robert Peterson; children, Gene Peterson of Deer Park, Keith Peterson of Spokane, Karen (Todd) Chaffins of Spokane, and Craig Peterson of Woodland Hills, CA; sister, Mary Lou Olds of Vancouver, WA; grandchildren, Nicole, Erik and Ryan Chaffins; nieces, Rosalie Olds and Dianne (David) Hanawalt of Vancouver, WA; uncle, William Gonser of Athol, ID; numerous cousins and extended family.

A memorial Service will be held at the Deer Park United Methodist Church on Saturday, June 29 at 2:00 pm.

The family has asked that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be sent to the Arthritis Foundation, 115 NE 100th, St., Ste 350, Seattle, WA 98125 or the Alzheimer’s Association, Inland Northwest, 910 W. Fifth Ave., Suite 256, Spokane, WA 99204.
