Duke wins first career PGA title in playoff

Golf: Journeyman Ken Duke made a 2 1/2-foot birdie putt on the second playoff hole Sunday to beat Chris Stroud at the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Conn., and earn his first PGA Tour victory in 187 starts.

Stroud had chipped in from 51 feet on the 18th hole to force the playoff.

But the 44-year-old Duke made the better approach shot on the second extra hole, bouncing his ball in front of the flag and rolling it close.

“I’ve knocked on the door a lot and here we are,” said Duke, who turned pro in 1994.

Canadian Graham DeLaet finished a stroke back in third place. Bubba Watson finished fourth, two shots behind, after making a six on the par-3 16th.

Former University of Washington golfer Chris Williams shot a 1-under 69 to finish tied for 30th with a 3-under 277.

• Stadler hangs on for Champions Tour win: Craig Stadler birdied four of the first six holes, then hung on to win the Encompass Championship in Glenview, Ill., by one stroke over Fred Couples by sinking a par-saving 12-foot putt on the final hole.

Stadler shot 1-under 71 to finish at 13-under 203. Couples finished at 12 under with a final-round 66.

• Park birdies playoff hole for win: World No. 1 Inbee Park sank a 4-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole against So Yeon Ryu, capping her final-round rally and winning the LPGA NW Arkansas Championship in Rogers, Ark.

Park began the day two shots back of a group of four leaders, but she vaulted to the top with three straight birdies on the front nine.

Park and Ryu finished the tournament tied at 12 under.

Spain beats Nigeria for spot in semifinals

Soccer: World Cup champion Spain defeated Nigeria 3-0 in Fortaleza, Brazil, behind two goals from Jordi Alba and another from Fernando Torres, setting up a semifinal showdown with Italy in the Confederations Cup.

Alba scored in the third minute to set the wide-open tone for the match.

• Uruguay romps fan-favorite Tahiti: Brazilian fans again screamed and cheered for Tahiti every step of the way, even as Uruguay pumped in goal after goal to beat the South Pacific Islanders 8-0 at the Confederations Cup match in Recife, Brazil.

Uruguay will play Brazil in the semifinals Wednesday.

Silver Stars outlast Liberty in overtime

WNBA: Shenise Johnson’s jumper with 36.1 seconds remaining in overtime lifted the San Antonio Silver Stars to 78-77 victory over the New York Liberty in Newark, N.J.

Danielle Robinson scored 18 pointsto lead the Silver Stars, who ended a four-game skid.

Officials reserved in Hernandez probe

Miscellany: Authorities continue to investigate, but not talk about, the killing of a semi-pro football player whose body was found a mile from the home of New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez.

A spokeswoman for the Bristol County district attorney’s office said that officials are not releasing details. Spokeswoman Yasmina Serdarevic said officials also are not talking about the cause of death of 27-year-old Odin Lloyd, whose body was found on Monday. His death was ruled a homicide.

State police officers and dogs searched Hernandez’s North Attleboro (Mass.) home for over three hours Saturday.

An attorney for Hernandez has said he would not comment on the searches.

• Pac-12, Big 10 add two more bowl matchups: The Big Ten and Pac-12 will have two more opportunities to play each other in California bowl games.

The Big Ten is set to announce new affiliations with the Holiday Bowl in San Diego and the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl in San Francisco to play the Pac-12. The conference and bowls officials are schedule to hold a teleconference today.

A person familiar with the decision tells The Associated Press the Fight Hunger will have the fourth selection from the Pac-12 after the College Football Playoff, of which the Rose Bowl is a part, the Alamo Bowl and the Holiday Bowl.
