Obituary: Burghard, Herbert C. “Herbie” (Age 95)

BURGHARD, Herbert C. “Herbie” (Age 95) Was surrounded by his family when he passed away from heart failure on June 20, 2013.

He was born in Ritzville, Washington on August 23, 1917 and was raised on the Packard farm.

In 1937, he graduated from Ritzville High School.

Herb married his high school sweetheart, Mary Ann Schafer, on August 23, 1941.

They were hard working and loving parents to their twin sons, Terry (Martha) Burghard and Jerry (Judy) Burghard and their daughter, Jan Weeks.

Herb and Mary Ann lived a fairly independent life in their Odessa house.

In 1940, Herb started working for the Odessa Trading Company as an electrician’s helper.

He then ran the Trading Company elevator at Moody and finally became a ‘top’notch’ welder that helped keep the farmer’s equipment in running condition.

He retired after 42 years of service to the Trading Company.

He was an active member on the City Council and in his community.

He loved gardening, woodworking, fixing things, taking walks and was physically able to do all of those things until the last month of his life.

He is survived by his loving wife of 72 years and his three children.

He also has three grandchildren; Mike (Kim) Burghard, Chad (Debbie) Burghard, and Kris Hemmerling: three great-grandchildren; Tyler, Riley and Kiernan: and three siblings; Don (Lorraine) Burghard, Ramona (Earl) Meise and Shirley (Fred) Rhodes.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
