In brief: Bail set for Craigslist robbery suspect
A 16-year-old suspect in a string of Craigslist robberies was being held Tuesday on a $35,000 bond in the Spokane County Jail.
Michael Garner was charged with three counts of first-degree robbery after investigators linked him to the theft of three Apple computers advertised on the classified ad website. In each of the cases, Garner arranged a meeting with a seller in a park and then arrived with different accomplices, according to court documents. The latest incident took place in Liberty Park on June 11. The victim, who said Garner drew a gun on him when demanding the computer, identified Garner in a photograph. Victims in two previous incidents, in May and March, also identified Garner.
Police estimate the total value of the stolen merchandise at $4,500. Authorities are still looking for Curtis Cyrus, a 20-year-old man investigators believe aided Garner in the May robbery at Franklin Park. Cyrus is facing one count of first-degree robbery.
Sergeant arrested in bikini barista sting
EVERETT – Police said a Snohomish County sheriff’s sergeant has been arrested for providing a chain of bikini barista stands with information about an ongoing prostitution investigation.
The Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office identified the sergeant as Darrell O’Neill, a 30-year veteran of the department, and said he was arrested Tuesday for investigation of conspiracy to promote prostitution and official misconduct.
Officer Aaron Snell, an Everett police spokesman, said Kent police were investigating the conduct of bikini baristas in March and learned about the sergeant’s activities.
The Daily Herald reported that among the allegations contained in a search warrant affidavit is that O’Neill provided the information about when the stands were facing undercover surveillance in exchange for sexual favors, and that an owner of several stands gave him a tablet computer to send messages to the workers.
Police said they made several arrests as they raided espresso stands in Everett, Edmonds, Lynnwood and Kent. The sergeant has been placed on paid administrative leave.
PORTLAND – The search for missing climber Kinley Adams was derailed Tuesday for the second day in a row by whiteout conditions that restricted the visibility needed to find a man on Oregon’s tallest mountain.
Adams, a 59-year-old dentist from Salem, was reported missing by relatives on Saturday night, roughly six hours after his expected return from a climb on the west side of Mount Hood. His vehicle was still on the mountain at Timberline Lodge.
Just like on Monday rain, snow and poor visibility stopped searchers from reaching the part of the mountain where they believe they have the best chance of spotting him.
Despite a weather forecast that doesn’t predict clear skies until Thursday, Mark Morford, a Portland Mountain Rescue spokesman, said the rescue remains in what he calls the “positive-urgency stage.”
