Year over for Teixeira

New York Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira will have season-ending surgery on his right wrist.

The Yankees said Wednesday that the All-Star had an MRI exam with dye contrast and that team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad determined the torn tendon sheath had not adequately healed. New York said hand specialists Dr. Melvin Rosenwasser of New York-Presbyterian Hospital, Dr. Michelle Carlson of the Hospital for Special Surgery and Dr. Keith Raskin of the New York University School of Medicine school concurred in the diagnosis.

Recovery time for the surgery is projected at six months.

Teixeira was hurt while hitting off a tee March 5, when he was with the U.S. team at the World Baseball Classic. He made his season debut May 31, then came out of a game June 15 because of inflammation. He went back on the disabled list and did not respond to a cortisone shot.

Toronto outfielder Jose Bautista, limited to four at-bats after July 16 last year because of a similar injury, had surgery last Sept. 4 and was ready for spring training.

A two-time All-Star, Teixeira was batting just .151 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 53 at-bats. He is among five regulars who have missed a substantial part of the Yankees season.

Cashman backs off

Brian Cashman says he regrets the words he used in an angry response to Alex Rodriguez’s injury update on Twitter, but the New York Yankees general manager insists the team wants a healthy A-Rod back at third base as soon as possible.

Cashman says owner Hal Steinbrenner told him he spoke with Rodriguez on Wednesday in Tampa, Fla., and reiterated that injury information should be announced by the team, not individual players on social media.

Clearing the bases

The Indians activated shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera from the 15-day disabled list and designated infielder John McDonald for assignment. … The Indians said All-Star closer Chris Perez (shoulder) will come off the DL today. … Red Sox right-hander Clay Buchholz had to shut down his bullpen session and was expected to have an MRI exam later Wednesday. Buchholz (9-0) has been on the DL since June 9 with a neck strain. … The Red Sox activated right-hander Clayton Mortensen (Gonzaga) from the 15-day DL. Mortensen had been placed on the DL on June 11. He was 1-2 with a 5.34 ERA before the injury. … Orioles pitching prospect Dylan Bundy will have season-ending elbow ligament-replacement surgery today.
