Obituary: Brewer, Luretta Wyckoff
She had just celebrated her 80th birthday and 59th wedding anniversary with her husband Larry L. Brewer MD.
Rett was born in Fairfield, Iowa.
She married Larry, her high school sweetheart in 1954 after he returned from serving in Korea.
She supported him working various jobs as he went through medical school.
Her favorite was programming computers for the statistical service at the University of Iowa in the early days of computing.
After Larry graduated from the University of Iowa medical school, they moved to Spokane with their first daughter and a Pekingese puppy in a ‘61 Chevy.
Rett quickly demonstrated her work ethic and commitment to community and church by becoming a charter member and first Sunday school superintendent of Plymouth Congregational Church in Spokane.
She lived on the family ranch south of Spokane with Larry and her daughters for 18 years.
She was not only mother, wife, and home-maker, but we considered her our ranch manager as she kept us all on track and organized whether we were on the road showing horses, or at home taking care of the animals and the gardens and participating in sporting and school events.
She was always there for us, and she was there for her community in various capacities.
Her life’s work was running the family household, working on charitable events such as the Spokane Symphony, Music Festival, Medical Society Auxiliary, PEO, St. George’s School events and many more.
Rett was extraordinarily talented and creative.
She enjoyed calligraphy, making greeting cards, embroidering for family and friends and other artistic endeavors.
She and Larry lived in Ocean Shores, Olympia and several years in Sun City West and hit the road in a motorhome for a couple of years traveling across the country.
She and Larry helped those in need in Oklahoma and Ecuador donating medical supplies and their time.
Wherever she went, she touched lives.
Luretta is preceded in death by her parents, Willis and Helen Wyckoff.
She is survived by her husband Larry, her two daughters Carrie Gifford and Suzanne Bodwell, her 3 grandchildren whom she absolutely adored and loved, Samantha Dorr, Calan Jordheim and Bo Jordheim and her dear great-grandbaby Juniper Dorr.
She will be laid to rest at Tahoma National Cemetery in Washington State.
