South Alabama GU’s ‘Battle’ foe

College basketball: The Gonzaga men’s basketball team will face South Alabama Dec. 14 in the 11th annual State Farm Battle in Seattle at KeyArena.

The event marks the third meeting between the two teams, with the Zags winning twice. The teams last faced each other in 1999 in the Hawkeye Classic in Iowa City, Iowa, with the Zags defeating the Jaguars 80-63.  The first meeting came in 1996 in Seattle during the U.S. West Tournament where the Bulldogs won 60-43 in KeyArena.

The Jaguars will be led by new head coach Matthew Graves who spent the last 10 seasons as an assistant coach at Butler. Graves will be joined by former Butler star guard Darnell Archey who has accepted an assistant coaching position on the USA staff.

Tickets for the State Farm Battle in Seattle will go on sale in early September at all Ticketmaster outlets.

No Tour de France for Farrar

CYCLING: Tyler Farrar won’t be participating in the 2013 Tour de France.

The Wenatchee native wasn’t chosen as one of Team Garmin-Sharp’s riders for the race, which starts today.

Farrar, a renowned sprint racer, had participated in every Tour de France race since 2009.

“Tyler is disappointed (to not participate in the Tour de France),” Tyler’s father, Ed, told the Wenatchee World on Thursday. “But he’s on a contract (with Garmin-Sharp), and the team makes the decisions. Tyler accepts whatever the boss says.”

Ed Farrar said that Tyler was left off of Team Garmin-Sharp’s roster because the team is shifting its strategy.

Swap offered for Hernandez jerseys

NFL: The New England Patriots are offering a new jersey to fans who want to get rid of those they bought with Aaron Hernan- dez’s name on it.

Hernandez is being held in jail on charges of first-degree murder. He has pleaded innocent. The team has released him and taken all Hernandez jerseys off the shelf at its souvenir store at Gillette Stadium.

The team says fans can come to their store at the stadium on the weekend of July 6-7 for a free jersey of comparable value.
