Don’t tax bicycles

I don’t have a problem with our state gasoline tax going up 10 to 15 cents a gallon. Since we don’t have a state income tax, it is understandable that the state needs to have a revenue source.

However, I do have a problem with taxing bicycles in a world where they don’t emit CO2, and don’t damage the roads one bit. If you want to implement a tax, do it on the sale of studded tires that rut our roads and cause undue repairs and needless paint restriping.

Finally, fees based on the value of a car were immensely unpopular in the 1990s. Initiative 695 passed by a large margin in 1999, reducing the license tab fees to $30. Our license tab fees are already too onerous. Legislators, please don’t add more to them.
