The school honored the point guard and NBA All-Star game MVP during halftime of the Maryland-Wake Forest game Saturday. During a pregame news conference, the Winston-Salem native repeatedly referred to the city and campus as “home” and said he keeps a 336 phone number – this city’s area code. He says the honor is more special to him “because it’s home.”

Signed Forward Juwan Howard has signed a 10-day contract to return to the Miami Heat. The 40-year-old Howard will be entering his 19th NBA season, the past two were spent with Miami.

• The Chicago Bulls have signed veteran forward Lou Amundson to a 10-day contract. The 30-year-old Amundson appeared in 20 games with Minnesota this season, his seventh in the NBA. He has also played with Philadelphia, Utah, Phoenix, Golden State and Indiana.

Considering FIFA’s top administrator is open to moving the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to winter if medical evidence showed matches in the intense summer heat would be dangerous for players’ health. FIFA has previously insisted that Qatar would have to make the request to move the tournament, while the tiny emirate has placed responsibility on the world soccer governing body. Temperatures in Qatar can exceed 104 degrees in June.

Fined The NHL has fined Dallas Stars forward Jamie Benn $10,000 for cross-checking Edmonton Oilers forward Ryan Jones from behind in a game on Thursday night. It was a first-time offense for Benn, who was assessed a major penalty and a game misconduct for the cheap shot. The fine was the maximum for a first offender.

Out Buffalo Sabres leading scorer Thomas Vanek was ruled out from playing against New Jersey on Saturday afternoon because of a nagging upper body injury. Interim coach Ron Rolston described the injury as short-term and hopes Vanek will return for Buffalo’s game at the New York Rangers today. Vanek ranks third in the NHL with 27 points (12 goals and 15 assists).

Tested The IAAF says several track athletes who competed at the 2005 world championships have tested positive for doping following re-testing of their samples. The international track and field body says the names of athletes will be revealed at a later date.
