Kane keeps Blackhawks’ streak alive

NHL: Chicago extended its NHL-record, season-opening points streak to 22 games Sunday when Patrick Kane scored the tying goal on a power play with 2:02 left in regulation and had the only goal in a shootout. That lifted visiting Chicago to a 2-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday.

Corey Crawford was perfect in the shootout and finished with 32 saves to help his team win a ninth straight game.

The Blackhawks have earned at least a point in 28 straight games – dating to a March 25, 2012 loss in regulation to Nashville – to tie the second-longest streak in league history. They’ve matched Montreal’s multi-season points streak from the 1977-78 season and trail only Philadelphia’s run of 35 straight games with at least a point during the 1979-80 season.

• Islanders net shootout win: John Tavares and Frans Nielsen scored in the shootout, lifting the New York Islanders to a 3-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators in Uniondale, N.Y.

Evgeni Nabokov made 29 saves for the Islanders. He also stopped Jakob Silfverberg and Daniel Alfredsson in the shootout.

• Nash leads Rangers past Sabres: Rick Nash had a goal and assist and also scored in the shootout to lead the New York Rangers to a 3-2 win over the visiting Buffalo Sabres.

Ryan Callahan also scored for New York in the shootout. Derek Stepan added a goal, and Henrik Lundqvist made 28 saves.

• League suspends Flyers’ Zolnierczyk: The NHL has suspended Philadelphia Flyers forward Harry Zolnierczyk four games for charging Ottawa defenseman Mike Lundin during Saturday’s game.

Zolnierczyk received a major penalty for charging and a game misconduct on the play. He will be fined just under $13,000.

Lundin suffered a concussion.

Heat tie mark with 14th straight win

NBA: LeBron James had 29 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists, and the Miami Heat tied a franchise record with their 14th straight victory, rallying to beat the Knicks 99-93 in New York.

Dwyane Wade added 20 points for the Heat, who had to overcome a 16-point deficit to beat the Knicks for the first time in three tries this season.

Carmelo Anthony scored 32 points for the Knicks.

• Thunder hold off Clippers: Kevin Durant scored 35 points, Russell Westbrook had 29 points and 10 assists, and Oklahoma City held off a late rally by the Los Angeles Clippers to win 108-104 on the road.

Chris Paul scored 26 points and Blake Griffin and Jamal Crawford added 20 points apiece for the Clippers. Paul made all nine of his free throws.

Purdue pulls off upset over No. 17 Wisconsin

Men’s basketball: D.J. Byrd scored 16 of his 22 points in the second half and Purdue (14-15, 7-9 Big Ten) earned a 69-56 upset over No. 17 Wisconsin (20-9, 11-5) in Madison, Wis.

Terone Johnson added 16 points for the Boilermakers, who had lost three straight road games and four of five overall. Purdue took control with a 21-3 run in the second half during which Byrd had nine points and Johnson eight.

• Burke lifts Wolverines over Spartans: Trey Burke stole the ball from Keith Appling near midcourt and went in alone for a dunk with 22 seconds remaining, then made another steal in the final seconds to give No. 4 Michigan (24-5, 11-5 Big Ten) a 58-57 win over No. 9 Michigan State (22-7, 11-5) in Ann Arbor, Mich.

No. 10 Kentucky tops No. 8 Tennessee

Women’s baskeball: A’dia Mathies scored 13 second-half points, including back-to-back 3-pointers during Kentucky’s 19-6 run, to help the No. 10 Wildcats (25-4, 13-3 SEC) pull away from No. 8 Tennessee (23-6, 14-2) for a 78-65 victory in Lexington, Ky.

Mathies, Kentucky’s No. 2 career scorer, finished with 16 points in her home finale as Kentucky claimed the No. 2 seed for this week’s Southeastern Conference tournament.

• Lady Lions lock up Big Ten championship: Maggie Lucas scored 34 points to lead seventh-ranked Penn State (24-4, 14-2 Big Ten) to an 82-67 victory over No. 20 Nebraska (22-7, 12-4) in Lincoln, Neb., clinching the Lady Lions’ second straight outright Big Ten championship and ending the Cornhuskers’ 10-game win streak.

Gulbis secures title at Delray Beach

Tennis: Qualifier Ernests Gulbis beat Edouard Roger-Vasselin 7-6 (3), 6-3 for his second title at the Delray Beach (Fla.) International Championships. The 109th-ranked Gulbis, who also won the event in 2010, is the first qualifier to reach a final this season.

• Pliskova wins Malaysian Open: Karolina Pliskova of the Czech Republic fought back from a poor first set to beat American Bethanie Mattek-Sands 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 to win the Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Leer, Cain earn wins at Indoor Championships

Track and Field: Will Leer ran the fastest indoor time run “at altitude” in winning the men’s mile at the USA Indoor Track & Field Championships in Albuquerque, N.M.

His winning time was 3 minutes, 58.79 seconds.

In the women’s mile 16-year-old Mary Cain, a high school junior, became the first high school student to win a national indoor or outdoor championship since Allyson Felix in 2003.

Cain finished in 5:05.68 to secure the top spot.

Also, Jeremy Wariner won the men’s 400 meters in a time of 45.82. It was his first indoor race since 2004. Ryan Whiting won the men’s shot put with a throw of 71 feet, 6 1/4 inches.

• Man dies during Alcatraz triathlon: Officials say a 46-year-old Texas man died in the frigid waters of the San Francisco Bay just moments after the start of the Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon.

Race officials said in a statement that they have reason to believe the man from Austin died of a massive heart attack.

Timbers rally to draw with Red Bulls

Miscellany: The Portland Timbers overcame two early goals by Fabian Espindola to forge a 3-all draw with the New York Red Bulls in both teams’ Major League Soccer season openers in Portland.

Espindola, a veteran acquired in the offseason from Real Salt Lake, scored in the ninth and 24th minutes, while Jamison Olave, also obtained in the trade with RSL, added a goal in the 28th minute.

• Gaudin wins Paris-Nice prologue: French rider Damien Gaudin beat countryman Sylvain Chavanel by one second in the prologue of the Paris-Nice race.

Gaudin sealed the first stage win of his career when he completed the twisting 1.8-mile prologue around the Paris suburb of Houilles, France, in 3 minutes, 37 seconds.

Today, the race continues with a flat 120.9-mile trek from Saint-Germain-en-Laye to Nemours. The race ends Sunday.
