Jim Kershner’s this day in history

Two simultaneous fights broke out at Lewis and Clark High School between seniors and underclassmen.

One took place in front of the school, after some juniors draped their class flag over the power lines outside the building. The senior boys took exception to this display and rushed the juniors. After a five-minute fracas, a senior climbed the pole and ripped down the flag.

The other fight was in the basement cafeteria and was more serious. Some freshmen boys laid claim to the main table, “in direct violation of an edict which was issued Monday by the seniors.”

When the seniors showed up, a melee broke out.

“For several minutes, the battle raged,” said the paper. “Tables were overturned, chairs smashed and woodwork marred.”

The principal and several faculty members “sprang into the fray” and seized some of the boys by the collar.

Names were taken and the principal promised an investigation.
