WV Knowledge Bowl team to compete at state

West Valley High School’s Knowledge Bowl team will compete at the state level later this month after placing second during the 2A Division regionals on March 2.

After all the points were recorded, the team consisting of Rixana Jopson, Gail Gallaher, Connor Gore, Kyle Hansen, Josh Glass and Kevin Cao defeated Gonzaga Prep and Pullman and qualified for state, adviser Bruce Berry said. They’ll compete once again at Arlington High School in Western Washington on March 23.

East Valley High School’s Knowledge Bowl team also qualified for state. Alec Jesperson, Josh Rogers, Tim Ngo, Bryce Pointer and Gayin Prior will represent their school at the state competition as well.

New shoes for Millwood students

The nonprofit Soul to Soles donated new shoes for about 50 students at Millwood Early Childhood Education Center. The children were able to pick out a pair of shoes, West Valley School District spokeswoman Sue Shields said, and had help to make sure they were a good fit.

Helping Millwood’s community garden

Millwood’s Pumpkin Patch Community Garden had some help last week from River City Leadership Academy. Teacher Ned Fadeley’s students volunteered on March 1 to help prepare flower beds, district spokeswoman Sue Shields said.

Raising cash for the Ronald McDonald House

Centennial Middle School students donated $2,288 in February to help the nonprofit Ronald McDonald House. They held a glow dance and organized special days like hat day to raise money by allowing students to pay $1 to wear a hat to school.

Leadership class learns election process

The results are in from Central Valley High School’s March 6 ASB election. The new officers are Daisy Daines, president; Drew Keeve, vice president; Hunter Wardian, secretary; Drayke Hilper, treasurer; and Josh Spencer, activity coordinator.

Spokane County Auditor’s Office printed the ballots for the election and offered to train about 20 students in Leanne Donley’s leadership class on the election process, elections manager Mike McLaughlin said.

The class ran the ballots on election machines from the office, he added, to help count the results.
