Dan Dickau named WCC hall inductee

LAS VEGAS – Former Gonzaga University basketball star Dan Dickau was one of nine new members inducted into the West Coast Conference Hall of Honor Saturday.

Joining Dickau from the other WCC schools were BYU’s LaVell Edwards (football), Loyola Marymount’s Edit Pakay (women’s cross country and tennis), Pepperdine’s Katherine Hull (women’s golf), Portland’s Darwin Cook (men’s basketball), Saint Mary’s Allegra Porter (women’s cross country), San Diego’s Petia Yanchulova (women’s volleyball), San Francisco’s Mary Hile-Nepfel (women’s basketball), and Santa Clara’s George “Pat” Malley (football).

Previous Gonzaga inductees are men’s basketball players Frank Burgess, Jeff Brown and Blake Stepp, and men’s soccer player Brian Ching.

Dickau reflected on how he chose the University of Washington out of high school, but “it didn’t go as well as I had planned.”

There were several Zags he had played with or against in high school, including Richie Frahm, Casey Calvary and Zach Gourde to name a few, and “I decided I wanted to go to Gonzaga. I knew there was something special going to happen there. I guess it worked out OK for both of us.”

In his two seasons with the Zags he scored 1,125 points which still ranks 28th on the all-time Gonzaga charts.

Dickau became Gonzaga’s inaugural Associated Press first-team All-American men’s basketball player in 2002. He was also named to the John R. Wooden All-America Team, was a Naismith Player of the Year finalist and was a two-time National Association of Basketball Coaches district first-team pick. Dickau was a two-time WCC first-team selection and was the 2002 WCC Player of the Year as well as being the 2002 WCC tournament MVP.
