Cougars lose in 10 innings

Rodney Garza’s RBI double in the bottom of the 10th inning gave host Texas-San Antonio a 4-3 victory over Washington State in a nonconference baseball game on Sunday.

The Roadrunners (12-5) tied the game in the ninth off closer J.D. Leckenby.

Brett Jacobs led WSU (9-6), going 3 for 5.

• Tyler Pfeffer singled home Justin Liu with two outs in the bottom of the 16th inning to give Whitworth (8-6-1, 3-0) a 6-5 victory over visiting Puget Sound (7-9, 2-4) in a Northwest Conference game.

Whitworth collected 19 hits, led by four hits each by Pfeffer and Jeremy Druffel. Spencer Ansett got the win with three innings of relief.

• CC Spokane swamped Green River 14-4 and 12-2 in a nonleague twinbill at Spokane Falls CC.

Trailing 4-0 in the opener, the Sasquatch (5-3) scored four runs in the sixth, three in the seventh and seven in the eighth. Austin Allen had three hits for CCS.

CCS picked up where it left off in the second game, scoring eight runs in the bottom of the first. The game was called after seven because of the 10-run rule. John Henry had three hits and Eli Driessen homered for the Sasquatch.

• Tyler Olson threw a four-hitter as Gonzaga (8-4-1) defeated host Hawaii (1-14) 3-1 on Saturday. Olson struck out six batters and walked two. Clayton Eslick went 2 for 3 for GU.

Sunday’s game was canceled because of inclement weather.

Softball

Host Whitworth won a pair of extra-inning games to sweep a doubleheader from Pacific in Northwest Conference play.

Heather Hesselgesser walked and scored on Sacha Clow’s two-out triple for the winning run in the eighth inning of the opener. The Pirates (8-10, 5-7) wrapped up the sweep of the Boxers (10-10, 7-5) with a 15-14 victory in nine. Riley Fritz, who won both games in relief, tripled in the ninth and eventually scored on an infield error.

• Southern Idaho scored all of its runs in the fourth inning in a 6-3 SWAC victory then came back in the second game to whip host North Idaho College 22-0 in a five-inning no-hitter.

Golf

Chris Williams (Moscow, Idaho) fired a final-round 68 over the Old Macdonald Course to lead Washington to a third-place finish at the Bandon Dunes (Ore.) Championship.

The Huskies finished 11 strokes back of champion Colorado.

Williams tied for third among individuals at 2-under 214.

Washington State placed 10th and Gonzaga 16th in the 18-team field. WSU’s Hank Frame and Gonzaga’s Sean Walsh placed in a three-tie for 21st at 3-over 219.

Track and field

Whitworth sophomore Christina Dobbins cleared a personal-best 5 feet, 6 1/2 inches to tie for third place in the women’s high jump and earn All-America honors at the NCAA Division III indoor championships at North Central College in Naperville, Ill.

Senior Carter Comito also earned All-America honors with a fifth place in the shot (56-8 1/2).
