In brief: Wrong-way driver crashes into Subway
An elderly woman mistakenly put her car in drive instead of reverse and drove through the windows and into the Subway restaurant in the Shadle Shopping Center on Sunday.
The restaurant had several employees and some customers inside when the car crashed, pushing tables and chairs up onto the main serving counter inside the restaurant located at 2503 W. Wellesley Ave., Spokane police Officer John Gately said.
Neither the people inside the establishment nor the driver were injured. The case remains under investigation, but the driver was not cited at the scene, Gately said.
“She was leaving. She got confused about which gear and she put it in forward instead of reverse,” Gately said.
Authorities say man shot wife by mistake
YAKIMA – A man mistook his pregnant wife for an intruder at their Terrace Heights home and shot her, leaving her in critical condition, Yakima County authorities said.
Investigators don’t suspect criminal intent and the woman’s husband is cooperating, said Robert Udell, Yakima County Sheriff’s Office chief civil deputy.
The 27-year-old woman is eight weeks pregnant. She was shot once early Friday morning in the couple’s bedroom. She is in the hospital in critical but stable condition, Udell said in a statement.
The couple’s names were not released. Udell said they were waiting to notify the woman’s family to release her name.
According to entries in the sheriff’s online activity log, the woman’s husband initially reported an intruder was in the residence and then stated he had accidentally shot his wife. That call came in before 6 a.m. Friday.
“Male saying, ‘I can’t believe I did this,’ ” a dispatcher reported.
Scuba diver dies in accident in Sound
DES MOINES, Wash. – Fire officials say a scuba diver died in an accident in Puget Sound.
South King Fire and Rescue said a crew responded to a report of a diver down shortly before 7 p.m. Saturday at the Redondo Pier in Des Moines.
A news release said a dive partner first tried to help the stricken female diver while both were underwater but failed.
Working with the partner, the rescue crew was able to locate the diver and bring her to shore.
The fire officials said resuscitation began right away, but the diver was pronounced dead at the scene.
They said initial reports were that the diver had run out of air, but rescuers have not confirmed that or determined the cause of the accident.
Mom allegedly let toddler smoke pot
CENTRALIA, Wash. – Centralia police say they have arrested a 24-year-old woman on suspicion of letting her 22-month-old son inhale marijuana smoke from a bong.
Officers served a warrant on the woman’s home Friday, arresting her and the 25-year-old father of the boy. Police said they found 40 marijuana plants inside the residence as well as firearms, according to a Centralia police statement.
The man is being accused of three counts of unlawful possession of a firearm and manufacturing marijuana. The woman is being accused of unlawfully delivering a controlled substance to a minor and manufacturing marijuana.
The boy and another child are now in the custody of Child Protective Services.
