Texas State shoots down Redhawks

Joel Wright scored 26 points to lead Texas State to a 68-56 win over Seattle at Las Vegas in the first round of the Western Athletic Conference tournament Tuesday night.

Wright was 7 of 12 from the field for the game and had a team-high nine rebounds.

Texas State (11-21) led 36-28 at halftime. The score was tied only once and seventh-seeded Texas State never trailed. The Bobcats shot 50 percent from the field for the game, while Seattle shot 33.9 percent. Seattle outrebounded Texas State 35-29 but had 19 turnovers, six more than the Bobcats.

Deshaun Sunderhaus led Seattle (8-22) with 15 points. Prince Obasi had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Chad Rasmussen added 11 points for the No. 10 seed.

Texas State moves on to play No. 2 seed Denver in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

UTSA 67, San Jose State 49: Jeromie Hill finished with a double-double and the Roadrunners (9-21) dominated the first half in an easy win over the Spartans in a first-round WAC contest.

Hill had 21 points and a game-high 10 rebounds for Texas-San Antonio. Kannon Burrage added 20 points for the Roadrunners, who rolled to a 28-16 halftime lead.

LaVanne Pennigton topped San Jose State (9-20) with 21 points.


New Mexico State 76, UT Arlington 63: After a tight first half, the Aggies (15-15) pulled away and defeated the ninth-seeded Mavericks (7-23) at Las Vegas.

Eighth-seeded New Mexico State picked up its sixth win in seven games and second straight win over UTA. The Aggies advance to face top-seeded Seattle in the quarterfinals today.

Denver 73, Texas State 63: The seventh-seeded Pioneers (14-16) shot a season-best 54.7 percent from the field en route to a victory over the 10th-seeded Bobcats (10-20) at Las Vegas.

Denver will face second-seeded Utah State in the quarterfinals tomorrow.
