In brief: Area fire stations go from numbers to new names

SPOKANE VALLEY – The Spokane Valley Fire Department Commissioners decided on new names for four fire stations Monday.

The department has been in the process of replacing the numerical designation for each station with a name that fits in with the community.

The commissioners voted unanimously to change the name of Station 1 to University Station, Station 8 to Pinecroft Station and Station 9 to South Valley Station. They also voted unanimously to change the name of former Station 6, which had previously been renamed Gateway Station, to Edgecliff Station.

Continuing education classes starting

SPOKANE COUNTY – New ACT 2 classes are starting at the Institute for Extended Learning.

The adult classes cover a variety of subjects, from watercolors to foreign languages to writing.

Talent event seeks young entrants

DOWNTOWN – Talented, stage-friendly kids in grades 1 through 12 are invited to submit an audition DVD for the 2013 Kids Got Talent Show next month.

Presented by the Kiwanis Club of Downtown Spokane, the show will be April 20 and offers more than $1,000 in scholarship prizes. Last year’s winners, Colby Acuff and Justin Sherfey, were invited to audition for America’s Got Talent.

DVDs are due Wednesday and should be sent to Kids Got Talent, c/o Tim Vorpahl, Vorpahl Wing Securities, 505 W. Riverside, Suite 205, Spokane, WA 99201. There is a $12 registration fee and digital photographs are required as well. Registration forms are available at www.kiwanisdt spokane.org.

Live try-outs are scheduled for April 1 and finalists will be invited to compete in the April 20 show at 7 p.m. at the Lincoln Center, 1316 N. Lincoln St.
