Maryland dumps Duke in ACC tourney
Men’s college basketball: Dez Wells slapped the floor – and knocked No. 2 Duke out of the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament at Greensboro.
Wells scored a career-high 30 points and Maryland upset the Blue Devils 83-74 on Friday night in the ACC tournament quarterfinals.
Wells was 9 of 13 from the field and 10 of 10 from the line to lead the seventh-seeded Terrapins (22-11). The Terps never trailed, held the league’s best team from 3-point range to 4-of-25 shooting from beyond the arc, and bolstered their NCAA tournament credentials with a second straight win over Duke (27-5).
• Wisconsin upsets Michigan in Big Ten tourney: Ben Brust scored 11 of his 14 points in the second half and No. 22 Wisconsin knocked off sixth-ranked Michigan (26-7) 68-59 in the second round of the Big Ten tournament at Chicago. Traevon Jackson had 16 points for the Badgers (22-10), who will play top-seeded Indiana in the semifinals today.
• Orange reach Big East final with OT win: Brandon Triche scored the go-ahead basket early in overtime and No. 19 Syracuse advanced to the Big East championship game with a 58-55 victory over No. 5 Georgetown (25-6) in the final conference clash of their storied heavyweight rivalry.
The fifth-seeded Orange (26-8) will make their 15th appearance in the tournament title game and go for their sixth crown tonight at Madison Square Garden.
• Louisville downs Notre Dame: Russ Smith scored 20 points and Peyton Siva added 12 to lead No. 4 Louisville to a 69-57 victory over No. 24 Notre Dame (25-9), the third straight year the Cardinals beat the Fighting Irish in the semifinals of the Big East tournament.
Second-seeded Louisville (28-5), one of the Big East’s tri-champions in the regular season, will face fifth-seeded and 19th-ranked Syracuse in the championship game tonight at Madison Square Garden.
NBA: LeBron James and Chris Bosh each scored 28 points, and the visiting Miami Heat made it 21 straight wins, beating the Milwaukee Bucks 107-94.
Only three other teams have won 20 in a row in one season, and the Heat now trail just the 1971-72 Los Angeles Lakers (33) and the 2007-08 Houston Rockets (22) after moving ahead of the 1970-71 Bucks.
• Hot Nuggets win 11th straight: Kosta Koufos scored 18 points and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds, helping the Denver Nuggets rally to beat the Memphis Grizzlies 87-80 for their 11th straight win, their longest win streak in 30 years.
• Kobe-less Lakers top Pacers: Kobe Bryant lasted just one quarter on a severely sprained left ankle, then watched Dwight Howard complete a go-ahead, three-point play with 90 seconds left to help the visiting Los Angeles Lakers hold off the Indiana Pacers, 99-93.
Bryant started two nights after he was hurt but was ineffective. He went 0 for 4 in the first quarter, then went to the bench and did not return.
Flyers defeat Devils 2-1 in shootout
NHL: Matt Read and Claude Giroux both scored goals in the shootout to lead the Philadelphia Flyers to a 2-1 home win over the New Jersey Devils.
Read beat Johan Hedberg on the first shot and New Jersey’s Ilya Kovalchuk matched him. Giroux scored the second shootout goal, and David Clarkson and Patrik Elias both failed in their attempts against Ilya Bryzgalov.
Djokovic quickly disposes of Tsonga
Tennis: Top-ranked Novak Djokovic has advanced to the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Open with a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in 54 minutes at Indian Wells, Calif.
Djokovic extended his winning streak to 22 matches dating to Oct. 31, when he last lost, to American Sam Querrey in Paris.
Scott in the mix at Tampa Bay Classic
Golf: Adam Scott had a putt for birdie on 16 holes in a second round that was without a bogey and without much stress, leaving hims with a 5-under 66 that left him one shot behind 31-year-old rookie Shawn Stefani in the PGA Tampa Bay Classic at Palm Harbor, Fla.
Stefani was at 7-under 135, one shot ahead of Scott and past champion K.J. Choi, who had a 67.
• Young Lee leads LPGA Founders Cup: Jee Young Lee birdied three of the last four holes to take a one-stroke lead over Ai Miyazato on another hot day in Phoenix at the LPGA Founders Cup.
Lee, the South Korean player who won the tour’s 2005 South Korean event, had a bogey-free 8-under 64 on Friday to reach 15-under 129 and break the tournament 36-hole record. • Red-hot Frost in front at Toshiba Classic: David Frost shot an 8-under 63 to take a one-stroke lead over Fred Couples after the first round of the Champions Tour’s Toshiba Classic at Newport Beach, Calif.
Frost had eight birdies in his bogey-free round, four on the first five holes on the back nine and another on the par-5 closing hole.
Barcelona to meet PSG in Champions
Soccer: Barcelona has been drawn to play Paris Saint-Germain in the quarterfinals of the Champions League at Nyon, Switzerland.
The three Spanish qualifiers for the last eight were kept apart in Friday’s draw, with nine-time champion Real Madrid taking on Galatasaray and Malaga facing Borussia Dortmund. The other quarterfinal is a tantalizing match of traditional powers, Bayern Munich and Juventus.
Chan wins, but Ten steals the show
Miscellany: While Patrick Chan won his third title at the World Figure Skating Championships in London, Ontario, there was no doubt Denis Ten won the night.
The little-known skater from Kazakhstan stole Chan’s spotlight – no easy thing to do in Canada – with a beautifully breezy and technically impressive performance to “The Artist.”
Ten won the free skate, but he couldn’t overcome the lead Chan had after the short program.
Earlier Friday, Tatiana Volosozhar and Makim Trankov won the pairs title, Russia’s first since 2005.
• Bilodeau, McPhie win moguls in Sweden: Heather McPhie of the United States and Alex Bilodeau of Canada won freestyle World Cup moguls events at Are, Sweden.
McPhie won the final with 24.48 points.
