Johnson nets goal, assist in Lightning win

NHL: Spokane’s Tyler Johnson and Ondrej Palat both scored their first NHL goals, and the Tampa Bay Lightning beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 on Saturday night.

Nate Thompson and Teddy Purcell also scored for the Lightning, who stopped a five-game losing streak at home.

Eric Staal scored the only goal for the Hurricanes, who dropped to 3-7 against fellow Southeast Division games.

• Chicago routs Dallas: Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa each scored twice in leading the visiting Chicago Blackhawks to an 8-1 rout of the Dallas Stars.

Stuckey scores 32 in loss to Portland

NBA: LaMarcus Aldridge had 31 points and 12 rebounds, and the Portland Trail Blazers handed the Detroit Pistons their eighth straight loss with a 112-101 home victory.

Former Eastern Washington star Rodney Stuckey had a season-high 32 points for the Pistons.

• Hayward’s clutch shot lifts Utah: Gordon Hayward scored 17 points in his first start since November, including a 3-pointer with 17 seconds left, and the Utah Jazz beat the visiting Memphis Grizzlies 90-84.

Nadal stays hot at Indian Wells

Tennis: Rafael Nadal rallied to beat Tomas Berdych 6-4, 7-5 in the semifinals of the BNP Paribas Open and reach his fourth ATP Tour final in as many events.

Nadal improved to 16-1 on the year.

In the other semifinal, Juan Martin del Potro defeated top-ranked Novak Djokovic 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, handing the Serb his first loss in 21 matches dating to last October.

Crowded near top at Tampa Bay

Golf: Kevin Streelman had a 6-under 65 at the PGA Tour Tampa Bay Championship and was tied for the lead with Justin Leonard (67) and George Coetzee of South Africa (68). But this tournament was wide open heading into the final day, with 16 players separated by only three shots.

• Frost in front at Toshiba Classic: David Frost maintained a one-stroke lead over Fred Couples in the Champions Tour’s Toshiba Classic at Newport Beach, eagling the final hole for a 5-under 66.

After opening with a 63, Frost had a 13-under 129 total.

Former Pullman resident Kirk Tripplet shot a 2-over 73 and is tied for 56th entering the final round.

• Miyazato leads LPGA Founders Cup: Ai Miyazato pulled back in front in the LPGA Founders Cup at Phoenix, Ariz., making three birdies in a four-hole stretch on the back nine.

At 19-under 197, she had a two-stroke lead over Stacy Lewis.

Bradley successfully defends welter belt

Boxing: Timothy Bradley (30-0) overcame an early beating and a 12th-round knockdown to win a narrow unanimous decision over Ruslan Provodnikov (22-2) at Carson, Calif., defending his WBO welterweight belt.

Rooney drives Manchester United

Soccer: Manchester United opened a 15-point lead in the English Premier League with nine games remaining, beating Reading 1-0 on a Wayne Rooney goal as second-place Manchester City lost 2-0 at Everton.

United (24-3-2) needs 13 points to clinch a record 20th English league title.

• Scoring outburst sparks Real Madrid: Cristiano Ronaldo, Luka Modric and Gonzalo Higuain scored during a 7-minute span in the second half as Real Madrid rallied to beat visiting Mallorca 5-2 in the Spanish league.

• Bayern Munich wins late: Bastian Schweinsteiger’s free kick deflected off the back of Philipp Wollscheid’s shoulder for an own goal in the 87th minute, giving first-place Bayern Munich a 2-1 win at Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga.

• Juventus’ lead grows with victory: Juventus extended its lead to 12 points, staying on track for a 29th Serie A title with a 2-0 win at Bologna.

St-Pierre manhandles Diaz at UFC 158

Miscellany: UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre manhandled Nick Diaz for five rounds en route to a lopsided unanimous decision at UFC 158 at Montreal.

St-Pierre (24-2) earned a unanimous decision, winning 50-45 on all three judges’ cards.

• Davis-White win 2nd world title: Two years after giving the United States its first world title in ice dance, Meryl Davis and Charlie White did it again.

The Americans beat defending Olympic and world champions Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir – in the Canadians’ hometown of London, Ontario, no less.

Kim Yu-na won the women’s title in her first appearance at the world championships in two years.

• Joyful Victory wins Santa Margarita: Joyful Victory led all the way in winning the $300,000 Santa Margarita Stakes by four lengths at Santa Anita, becoming thoroughbred racing’s newest millionaire.

• Will Take Charge by a head at Rebel Stakes: Will Take Charge ground out a victory in the $600,000 Rebel Stakes at Hot Springs, Ark., nudging Oxbow for the victory by a head in the Grade 2 race.
